Boundary Waters Blowdown Map Collection
The maps below have been compiled for use by the Minnesota Incident
Command System (MNICS) in preparing for response to possible wildfire
incidents relating to the July 4, 1999 blowdown in and around the
Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Use the links below each map icon to download copies to your computer.
Each map can be accessed in either of two formats:
-
The PDF versions of the maps provide the most flexibility in terms of
zooming and output capabilities. Adobe Acrobat Reader software is
required for viewing and printing these files (this
software may be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe web
site).
-
For those without access to Acrobat Reader software, or who only want
a quick look at the maps, the GIF versions can be displayed directly
in your web browser.
Additional maps, including visitor use restrictions, can be found in
the BWCAW Visitor Use Decisions 2000 section of the Superior National
Forest's Boundary
Waters Canoe Area Wilderness website.

Storm Damage Severity
Depicts storm damage severity at three levels of intensity. The map
was compiled through aerial sketch-mapping, where damage to each
public land survey section in the area was assessed as a discrete
unit. Locations of campsites and portages in the BWCA are also shown,
making the map suitable as a rough guide in trip planning to see or
avoid the blowdown. Note that the categorization of campsites as
"checked" or "usable" is no longer current. For a more detailed look
at these issues, see our online Storm Damage
Assessment Viewer.
